I’ve attended the National Speakers Association meetings for years and know many public speakers in this industry. It is a little known fact that most first year motivational speakers struggle for years to earn a living their public speaking jobs.
Corporations spend millions each year for the top public speakers to speak at their annual conferences and conventions. The speaking fees that a public speaker can earn range from $1500 to $120,000 for a public keynote speech. The perks are incredible in that you get paid to travel to the most beautiful resorts in the world and have it all paid for by the company who hired you. Now who do you know that would not want to have a job like that? It’s like my dad always said “if it was easy then everyone would do it”. Most public speakers have the same dreams starting out in the industry. To get booked for 3-4 keynote speeches per month and make a six to seven figure income quickly. This is possible in this industry but unlikely without knowing some of the secrets that the top motivational speakers understand.
My friend Lisa recently gave me the book The Four Agreements, by Don Miguel Ruiz. The first agreement challenged me to be impeccable with my word:
Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love. Wow! What awesome advice! So undeniable in its truth, and so difficult in its living! One of my primary goals in the writing of my public speaking career training course has been to adhere to this first agreement. Public speaking is an opportunity to change people’s lives and this has to be embraced first as a speakers responsibility and to strive to make it a part of our character. As a first practical step in launching a career in public speaking you should begin writing your book. If you’ve started then work diligently to finish.
